Comme Avira AntiVir Personal Free, AVG est un anti-virus gratuit, proposant malgré tout un certain nombre d'outils indispensables pour un bon antivirus, à savoir une protection résidente en mémoire, protection au niveau des Email, scan sur demande avec planification, mises à jour gratuites de la base et du moteur d'analyse, ou encore mise en quarantaine.

L'interface du logiciel, qui était autrefois assez rustique, s'est nettement améliorée avec la dernière version, et n'a plus rien à envier aux autres antivirus gratuits. Les performances en matière de détection n'ont jamais totalement convaincu dans les versions précédentes, mais on a toujours noté une tendance à l'amélioration sur ce point au fil des versions.

Il est encore de bon ton de disposer d'une disquette de démarrage pour dépanner une machine gravement plantée, le problème étant qu'il faut souvent manipuler plusieurs disquettes pour arriver à ses fins. Las de Norton Utitilies ? Fatigué de System Mechanic ? Marre des Jv16 PowerTools ? Si tel est le cas TuneUp Utilities pourrait bien vous combler. Son éditeur propose avec ce pack tout-en-un une véritable mine d'or en manière d'utilitaires et pourtant son fichier d'installation pèse moins de 10 Mo ! Au menu de ce pack d'utilitaires on retrouve, et c'est assez rare pour le souligner, un éditeur de base des registres qui vous permettra de créer des signets, d'effectuer des recherches en profonduer et de garder une trace de vos modifications. Côté base des registres, TuneUp dispose d'un module de nettoyage très efficace ainsi que d'une fonction de défragmentation. Histoire d'éviter tout désastre lors de l'édition de la base des registres, le module RescueCenter vous permettra d'annuler les modifications apportées ou de restaurer votre système à une date précédente.

TuneUp Utilities comporte également un module de nettoyage rapide des disques histoire de récupérer quelques précieux mégaoctets rapidement, et l'on retrouve un gestionnaire des modules lancés au démarrage de Windows. Celui-ci est fort complet et semble d'ailleurs inspiré du freeware Starter (également disponible dans notre logithèque), tout en proposant un accès aux services Windows. TuneUp Utilities comporte également un module d'informations système qui dispense quelques indications sur votre configuration et le module SystemControl permet de changer l'apparence et certains réglages de Windows XP. On pourra notamment changer les effets graphiques, activer ou désactiver certaines animations, régler le lissage des polices et la fonction ClearType mais aussi changer le comportement de la souris ou du menu démarrer. Comme si ce la ne suffisait TuneUp dispose également d'un ProcessManager qui liste les processus actifs et permet de les tuer et le tout est complété d'un optimiseur de la RAM qui va automatiquement libérer de la RAM tout en la réorganisant. On retrouvera également un outil d'analyse des Disques durs visant à corriger les erreurs de système de fichiers. La dernière version voit également l'arrivée tant attendue d'un défragmenteur de disque, même si les options de celui ci sont quasi inexistantes par rapport à un logiciel dédié. Enfin TuneUp Utilities permet de remettre de l'ordre dans l'affichage des programmes à désinstaller, il dispose d'un module de protection de la corbeille, d'un broyeur pour effacer tous vos fichiers sans laisser de tracer et cerise sur le gâteau le logiciel comprend WinStyler qui permet de changer les icônes mais aussi l'apparence de votre bureau Windows en téléchargeant tout simplement des packs de thème, gratuits, sur le site de l'éditeur. Un must !
